Marie Skodak Crissey (born Marie Skodak) was born in Lorain, Ohio on January 10, 1910. Marie attended the Ohio State University and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in education and Master's degree in Clinical Psychology, both in 1931. Skodak Crissey then went on to the University of Iowa, graduating in 1938 with a PhD in Developmental Psychology where she worked at the Iowa Child Welfare Research Station with Orlo Crissey. Orlo Crissey was born December 29, 1904 in Norfolk, Nebraska. Crissey graduated high school in 1921 and spent the subsequent two years working at his uncle's farm back in Illinois. In 1923, Crissey enrolled at Aurora College and took classes while continuing farm work. In 1924, Crissey transferred to the University of Minnesota, and received a BA from there in 1927, with concentration of studies in psychology and sociology.
